When you start to take the TOEFL Writing Exam, it is important to read the question very carefully. You should examine what the writing task is asking. To demonstrate the importance of this, consider the following: Your girlfriend tells you to remove a food stain from the carpet. She tells you to use a specific chemical product called “Stain Be Gone.” You go into the laundry room and instead of getting “Stain Be Gone”, you get a different chemical called “Clorox,” which is bleach. You clean the carpet with the new chemical and what happens? The brown carpet begins to turn an awful shade of yellow! Now you had good intentions and you worked hard to clean the carpet, you did not get the results you or your girlfriend expected because you used the wrong product; consequently, you made the carpet worse.

It is the same with TOEFL iBT writing. If you fail to follow the instructions the prompt gives you, it does not matter how hard you work, the end result will not be what the grader expected. As a result, you will not get the score you deserve. Think about the following three writing prompts:

1. Some people say that it is best to be loyal and to work for one company during one’s life. Others take the opposite view and say it is better to change jobs frequently in one’s life. Discuss these positions, using specific examples of both. Then tell which one you agree with and explain why.

2. In addition to their specialized classes in their major, students should also be required to take general education classes in a university. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons to support your opinion.

3. The automobile and the airplane are important inventions of the 20th century. Both of these inventions have had an important effect on our lives. Choose another invention that you think is important. Give specific reasons for your choice.

Can you say that these three prompts look the same to you? Do they have the same requirements or different? If you answered different, you are well on your way to being able to craft a successful essay.

The first prompt can be broken down into four tasks: The question is asking you to discuss both positions, which means (1) you need to write about why there are some people who say that it is better to be loyal to work for one company during one’s life; (2) you must also write about why there are others who say it is better to change jobs frequently in one’s life; (3) you need to tell which of the opinions you agree with; and (4) you need to explain why (i.e., give reasons). Be careful to remain indifferent until near the end, you do not want to state your position first in this type of essay.

The second prompt may be divided into two argumentative tasks- (1) that of deciding whether you agree or disagree with the statement: “In addition to their specialized classes in their major, students should also be required to take general education classes in a university.” (2) Also you have to give various reasons to support your viewpoint. Starting with your argument in this type of essay, you assert which view is the same as yours. In the remainder of the essay, you state why you agree with that viewpoint.

During the third writing prompt, yet another style of argumentative essay is introduced, the task is straight forward- (1) that of using another invention that you believe is important. (2) You have to give specific reasons for your choice. The word “another” means something other than the automobile or the airplane. Consequently, if you begin to write about the airplane or the automobile, you will be penalized for not following the instructions provided for this writing prompt.

The concept is simple: think before you write. Make sure you understand what the writing task is.

TOEFL iBT: Have You Heard About It?

The TOEFL iBT is an important test due to the fact that thousands of universities use this test to make important decisions like admissions, scholarships, and decisions regarding graduate study. Administered at thousands of designated locations throughout the world, the TOEFL iBT consists of reading, listening, speaking, and writing. It takes about 4 1/2 hours to complete with a 10 minute break given after the listening section. The cost of the TOEFL iBT is approximately $150. Note-taking is permitted on all of the parts.

The reading section takes about 60-100 minutes to complete and has three 750 word academic passages, with 36-70 questions measuring the test-taker’s ability of comprehension and analysis. The listening section takes about 60-90 minutes to complete and has two conversations (3-5 minutes long) and four lectures (3 minutes), with 34-51 questions measuring the test-taker’s ability to understand what was heard.

The speaking section usually takes 20 minutes and has six specific speaking tasks. The first two speaking tasks ask the test-taker to either (1) express an opinion on a topic or (2) choose a preference between two choices. The next four speaking tasks require a test-taker (3) to read, listen, and speak in relation to a campus-related topic; (4) to read, listen, and speak in relation to an academic-related topic; (5) to listen and speak in relation to a campus-related to topic; and finally (6) to listen and speak in relation to an academic-related topic. The test-taker is given roughly 15-30 seconds to prepare an answer and then 45-60 seconds to give the correct responses.

The writing section, taking 50 minutes, has two tasks. In the first writing task, a test-taker is given 30 minutes to write on a familiar topic. In the second writing task, a test-taker is given 20 minutes to read, listen, and write an essay in response to the two academic sources.

The scores on the TOEFL iBT range from 0 - 120, each section receiving a scaled score from 0 - 30. The scaled scores in the reading and listening sections are based on the number of correct answers. Human raters score the six speaking tasks from 0 - 4, the sum of which are converted into a scaled range from 0-30. Like the speaking section, human raters also score the two writing tasks from 0 - 5, the sum of which are converted into a scaled score of 0-30. Though each university sets its own admission policies, generally a total score of 60-61 and 80-81 is seen by many institutions as acceptable for undergraduate or graduate study.

How an Article Submitter Program Helps With Article Marketing

As with any business, the internet marketers have a constant eye on their expenses. One of the most popular ways to market products, sites, or services is through article marketing. This simple marketing method costs the marketer little more than writing and research.
